Every person has a story to tell. Though sadly for most individuals their stories are seemingly lost forever buried in old card board boxes hidden deep in a dark corner of a basement. Or worse, they are destroyed by fire or flood or just thrown out. The picture you see above of the four Union soldiers is a copy of a daguerreotype that was housed in one of those card board boxes in my sister's basement. Little did we know that the gentleman on the far right, Colonel William Bion Mason, played an important part in the battle of Shiloh during the Civil war. We also never knew that another relative, David Eckstein, served as a sergeant in Von Heer's Light Dragoon's serving as one of General Washington's body guards. Another relative, Joseph Flavious McCulloch, helped found High Point College in North Carolina. The accumulation of stories both, good and bad, form a rich and vibrant family history that should be preserved and shared. It also provides insight into who you are and where you came from.
Testimonials
Testimonial from Terry Hancock My mom was an only child, and we had no contact or information on the rest of her family. With little information to go on but my mom s altered birth certificate, Rachel helped develop a family tree that traced our family history back several generations. There were a few surprises compared to our origin story give us by our mom. If you are looking for some help searching your family tree, I highly recommend Rachel for her professionalism, perseverance, helpfulness, and thoroughness. It was a very good experience.

Publications/Media
Preface to a book published by Larry Cates The following records are taken from two ledgers housed in the historical archive of Alamance Church covering the community and its people from 1820 to about 1914. They are transcribed and indexed with kind permission of the church historian. I must especially thank Rachel McCulloch, a professional genealogist and avid history buff who has been working tirelessly to capture some of the earliest church documentation in our county. I cannot express enough admiration for Rachel s work. Little do we realize the treasures that are sometimes hiding under our very noses. Many churches retain their early records on-site or with a local historian. At other times, we may find the sources we seek in a denominational institution of higher learning or a diocesan archive, but it always nice to see them residing in the same place where they were first created. The two books set out here include a creed and covenant, a few early session records, lists of pastors, deacons, and elders, and, best of all, an extensive accounting of congregants along with many baptisms and a few marriages and burials. I hope this effort to transcribe and index them will make them more accessible and usable to a wider public. Please look for additional church records of different congregations in future issues of this publication.
