I have been pursuing my ancestors since I joined the DAR via my Great Grandmother on my father’s side, and realized I needed to get my mother into the organization, too. I have now proved several supplementals on Mom’s side, and on Dad’s side, too. Another mystery was my maternal grandmother’s roots; we had no information about her parents at all. Through DNA, I have found 2nd cousins, and met several of them in person.
I realized that not only did I enjoy researching family trees, but I was pretty good at it, too. Not everyone wants to spend time online or pursuing documents in obscure places, but everyone should have the opportunity to know who their ancestors were. That is why I decided to start doing genealogy professionally. Most of us don’t have “famous” ancestors, but they all deserve to be remembered. I do believe that “every tree needs roots”, and that it helps us to know where we are going if we know where we came from. Even if our ancestors are not who we hoped they might be, or aren’t from where we thought they would be from.
My goal is to provide this type of information to my clients. I will research records from multiple sources, and write up a comprehensive report that tells the family’s story. I will bring in historical references when needed to explain various aspects of the records, and show images of documents when available. I currently have experience researching in Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Minnesota, and New York. I can help you understand DNA results. I enjoy using WikiTree; I can help you add your part of the world tree there.
One of my favorite parts of learning about my ancestors is learning about history as well. None of us live in a vacuum, and the events around us shape our lives, just as past events shaped our ancestors’ lives. In my blog, which I call Geneature because it combines genealogy and literature, I review books that are either about history, or historical fiction, or biographical. Here is the link: https://walnuthillgenealogy.com/blog/ If you do nothing else with your genealogy search, I urge to find books that talk about where and when your ancestors lived.
I am also available as a speaker. My topics include an overview of WikiTree, the early development of churches in the US, how to find your ancestors in a cemetery, and using city directories for research.
