For Brian Nash of How We Got Here Genealogy, family history is about more than just names and dates – it’s about the compelling human stories woven through our histories. His own journey began from a unique starting point: a childhood spent moving across Canada as part of a military family. This constant relocation left him with a yearning to understand his roots, a deeper answer to the simple question, “Where are you from?” Coupled with a profound love for history, this quest ignited a spark at a young age. Brian vividly recalls the pivotal moment as a boy, receiving a copy of his maternal grandfather’s family tree – a tangible link to a past that instantly captivated his imagination and fueled a desire to learn the stories of all those who came before. This early introduction, combined with the desire for a more profound sense of belonging, led him to actively pursue his own research at the age of 19 while studying history at the University of King’s College in Halifax.
For Brian, understanding our personal history is more vital than ever in a world where the past is sometimes carelessly revised. By encouraging others to explore their own family stories – the people, places, and events that shaped them – he believes we can make history personal, allowing it to truly come alive and fostering a deeper connection to our shared human experience.
Brian’s personal connection to the past has led to fascinating discoveries and is deeply rooted in his Scottish and Irish heritage, where whispers of clan tartans and the lilt of Gaelic still echo. His ancestors embarked on arduous journeys across the Atlantic, arriving in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia during the transformative 18th and 19th centuries.
From his current home in PEI, Brian shares his extensive knowledge and deeply personal insights, guiding others to connect with their own unique and vibrant family narratives through How We Got Here Genealogy Services. Driven by a desire to help others claim their heritage, Brian provides expert assistance in researching and securing the vital records needed for the updated Canadian by Descent citizenship rules. As a passionate educator, he hosts the How We Got Here Genealogy YouTube channel and podcast, and he frequently shares his expertise on Atlantic Canadian family history through engaging presentations and workshops for historical societies and community groups.
A dedicated professional in his field, Brian is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia, the Scottish Genealogy Society, and the Prince Edward Island Genealogical Society. He currently serves as a Board Member for both the Prince Edward Island Community Museums Association and the Bedeque and Area Historical Society.
