Kenyatta D. Berry African American Research Scholarship
Introduced in 2023, the Kenyatta D. Berry African American Research Scholarship recognizes an aspiring professional with a significant interest in developing a career in African American genealogy. This scholarship is available to the public.
Applications are open! Deadline 30 April 2025.
The application must contain the following: name, address, contact phone number, email address, list of relevant extracurricular activities (including applicant’s organizations and volunteer activities), short answers to the following (up to 500 words per question):
- How do you see yourself involved in African American genealogy over the next five years?
- How do you imagine you will use the information gleaned from the Professional Management Conference (PMC) in your career?
Award recipient evaluation is based on the following elements, (for a total of 75 points):
- Follow instructions/meet deadline, 5 points;
- Extracurricular activities (organizations, volunteer activities, etc.) 10 points; and
- Answers to essay questions 1 and 2. Maximum 30 points each question, for a total of 60 points.
- One registration for the APG Professional Management Conference which must be used for the conference in the calendar year of award notification; and
- Reimbursement of up to $1,000 for hotel and travel expenses (following US IRS guidelines for nonprofits) when attending the APG Conference in person, when required receipts are provided. (NOT applicable for 2025.)
The conference will be held virtually September 18-20, 2025.
About Kenyatta D. Berry
Kenyatta D. Berry served as APG President from 2012 through 2013. As the host of PBS's Genealogy Roadshow, she helped popularize the exploration of family history. Currently, she hosts Conversations with Kenyatta, a diverse podcast with a focus on African American genealogy. Additionally, Kenyatta is a contributor to the 1619 Project, a program re-examining the legacy of slavery in the United States.
