Having worked in the Finance sector for over 35 years, both as a Partner and Head of Trust and Corporate for an international firm of accountants, I turned my attention to my passion: genealogy. After training with the University of Strathclyde,  I established 'Kathy Gillen Genealogy'.

I am so lucky to be working with an excellent team, made up of family members, close friends and researchers whom I have known for many years.

The researchers are a mixture of experienced and trainee practitioners, based mostly in Jersey and the UK.

Clients are usually in Jersey - where I am based - and the UK, but some are further afield e.g. U.S., Canada

Research tends to focus on the Channel Islands, UK, Ireland, US, Canada and Australia, although I was involved in a project recently with Baghdad and India connections. When necessary, I work with specialists in the location where I am researching.

I conduct research using both traditional methods and DNA testing.

I am a past fellow of the Institute of Directors and attained Chartered Director status, and a retired member of STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners).

For leisure, I like to travel, walk, sing and go to the theatre.

Passionate about Italian genealogy, family research and Italian language, I have been working as freelance translator and Italian language teacher since 2007.  Traveling the world and meeting people from different countries have always been my great passions, so I spent several years abroad, in France, Australia and Belgium. After an extensive research about Italian immigration in Australia for my Masters Degree and an internship at the Italian Consulate in Sydney, I started doing research as genealogist and, once back in Italy, I decided to do what I had always dreamed of ... helping people to find their Italian roots, to explore my home country and experience off-the beaten path regions in Italy!

I 'am also an Authorized Tour Guide and tour designer for ancestry tours in Central Italy and in particular in Le Marche, an unspotted Region with such great landscapes and natural beauties and tophill medieval villages, where you can really experience the authentic Italian life!

I strongly believe that relying on a local expert for genealogy research makes the difference!

Your ancestry isn't just a list of names and dates, it's the colorful tale of your family's past and present. It's what gives your name its special meaning and continues to shape your story every day.

My degrees are in biology and chemistry, a.k.a. puzzle solving, research, and fact finding. I am a research nerd that loves the meticulous details. I build accurate family trees full of historical records, immigration and naturalization documents, newspaper articles, photographs, ship manifests, and more.

I am a story teller, performer, and writer living in NYC. I use these skills to piece together the entertaining and true stories about your ancestors. I document and present them to you to share around your dinner table. Together we ensure your family stories are never lost again. Stories with drama that makes Hulu and Netflix envious.

Learn the names of your ancestors, uncover what you have in common along side the lost family stories.

Is there a mystery within those gnarled branches and fallen leaves of your family history tree?

Are you intrigued or perplexed about the history of your ancestors?

Or are you in search of that final resting place of an ancestor within Yorkshire and beyond?

Hello! My name is Tee Bylo and I am your genealogist, writer, historical researcher and grave hunter here at The Dead Sleuth.

The Dead Sleuth is a registered company located in the City of York offering professional genealogical services for those looking to solve the riddles and absurdities of their own family history.

With access to a wealth of local repositories and archives throughout Yorkshire and beyond – I work with those who need an experienced and dedicated history sleuth by their side as they embark on a fascinating journey to uncover the lives of their ancestors.

From genealogical advice, family history research, probate transcription, archive retrieval, to photography, lineage reports and ancestral storytelling – The Dead Sleuth offers a rich menu of research services.

And, if I’m not in search of a missing ancestor or poring over the details on a newly discovered death certificate or trawling through the parish records in search of a burial entry – I’ll be wandering among the tombstones somewhere with notebook and camera in hand.

As a enthusiastic taphophile with an interest in tombstone symbolism - I also undertake grave hunts with the use of parish records and newspapers as the location and image capture of the resting place of our ancestors can be a poignant piece of the jigsaw.

In the absence of a marked grave I can also research, and photograph the surrounding vicinity in which an ancestor rests.

I share the tales and triumphs of family history and of my wanderings among the tombstones in search of the unquiet dead as a geneablogger at Graveyard Squirrel.

The Dead Sleuth also offers bespoke ancestral tours for visitors who are curious about understanding their family history in the context of location and would love to walk in the footsteps of an ancestor, visit the place they once called home or stand at the foot of their grave in a quiet churchyard.

However, as every research commission is as unique as the person who is requesting it – I offer an initial thirty minute FREE consultation to ensure that I am the perfect sleuth for my client.

As a public speaker, I am happy to chat with eager ears and curious minds about tales of Victorian criminality, tombstone tourism, sleuthing those elusive ancestors and fallen women.

Passionate about the benefits of Ancestral Healing – I also work alongside those who are seeking to understand, reveal and free inherited grief and trauma from their family histories.

And with my love of family history, storytelling and Victorian crime – I am the founder of The Polite Tourist which offers unique walks through the unquiet streets of York, Scarboro’, Leeds and beyond.

You can discover The Dead Sleuth on Trustpilot, X. Facebook, and Instagram.
