• Family History Research

I’m Chloe Walker, a family history researcher based in Houston, Texas. My passion for family history started with my maternal grandmother Mary Belle who died a year before I was born. I knew little about her, but as an adult, I made an impromptu stop on a road trip home in the small North Texas town where she was born. I stumbled onto a cemetery with a plot with three generations of my family. So many questions about them popped into my head and I was hooked.  Through my own family history research, I have built a deeper connection to Mary Belle, a working mother of two and a librarian.

After that first cemetery visit, I spent hundreds of hours poring through online records to find tidbits about my ancestors, like the newspaper clip announcing my great-great grandmother’s pig wandered off the farm, and the census record where I learned my third great grandfather worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. I soon started attending genealogy seminars to broaden and deepen my research skill set.  I also began visiting research libraries like the Clayton Library in Houston where I also volunteer, the Texas State Archives, and the Mississippi Archives. I have travelled throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas to visit local county collections, libraries and museums.

The tools required to research family history are very similar to the skills I used as a family and immigration lawyer: analyzing evidence and personal testimony and drawing conclusions based on the strength and sources of that information. I started Moonstruck Genealogy to help others make their own unique connections to their ancestors and think about the legacy they want to leave for future generations.
