I began my genealogy journey at age 20 when I purchased a do-it-yourself guide to your family tree called Trace Your Roots by Grahame Hughes. As a young girl, I remember summer vacations spent in Texas, sitting around the kitchen table with my grandmother and aunts, listening to the stories of my ancestors. Every visit included a trip to the local cemetery; I think this is why I love visiting dead relatives whenever I travel. In the beginning, I populated my family tree with information passed to me from distant relatives. Over time, however, I began to question the validity of those facts. I suddenly realized the importance of proper sourcing. I have done a lot of research over the years and made a lot of discoveries but what I am most proud of is my 10-year search for her mother s ancestry. My mother died before my 2nd birthday and I was raised by my paternal grandparents. No one talked about her and I had few facts about her and none about her family. The veil of mystery began to lift when the 1940 census was released. Not only did I find my mother listed at age 14 but I also found a big surprise; my grandmother had been born in England! This opened the door to my mother s ancestry, and I have since traced her both maternal lines back three generations. There is still much to be discovered, however. Did I mention that I also discovered I had five half-siblings by her mother s previous marriage? All without the help of DNA (although DNA did confirm it). I hold a four-year degree in Business Administration and a two-year degree in Computer Science. I am also a certified Project Manager and Business Analyst. My years working in the Information Technology field has taught me how to problem solve and to be detail oriented. As a novice writer, I know how to tell a good story.
