Biography:
About me
I got into genealogical research because as a person of African ancestry raised in the United States, I was taught to believe that learning the specifics about my heritage was not possible. I was certain that the history of my ancestors was doomed to be lost forever to time.

Then genealogy and genetic testing began to be marketed to a broader audience with the advent of Ancestry DNA in the mid aughts. I decided to take the plunge. While I was initially fixated with the breakdown of my DNA results, over time I became more interested in the people who were popping up as cousins. Who were these people? How are we connected?

As I started following the paper trail, I've learned my ancestors were enslaved people, slave owners, fishermen, barbers, washerwomen, storekeepers, laborers, farmers, housekeepers and land owners. They hailed from Africa. They hailed from Europe. They spoke English. They spoke French. They spoke Spanish.

But the most important thing I've learned is that the truth is far more interesting than the version of history most of us are taught in school. This is the truth that drives me.

My goal in researching is to show other people that learning the history of their family is not only within reach, but worth pursuing.
