Kincardineshire Ancestors

Summary Tab

Biography:
I am a professional genealogist based in Kincardineshire, in North East Scotland where I have lived for almost 25 years. I specialise in researching the lives of Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire ancestors, for which my knowledge of local places and records is invaluable, and am also happy to trace ancestors who have moved throughout Scotland, the UK and worldwide. I completed my Post Graduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies at Strathclyde University in 2012, during which I undertook a number of projects researching people from the area and in particular those who migrated and emigrated throughout the world from Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire during the 19th Century, and the families they left behind. I have researched records from a number of other countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada & the USA and assisted a number of visitors to the area (and those planning visits) who wish to see where their ancestors lived, walk in their footsteps, and visit their graves. I am a member of Stonehaven Heritage Society and Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History Society and have given a number of talks to local groups.

Service Description:
My services are tailored to the needs and wishes of my clients. These may range from photographing a gravestone, or a search for mention of family members in local archives, to a full family history including a social history of the area at the time. I will also undertake research concerning the history of a building or area. I have easy access to archives and libraries around Kincardineshire and Aberdeenshire which hold many local records such as old parish records (pre- 1855), church and school records, local newspapers, tax and census records, memorial inscriptions and burial records, and local history books. I also make regular visits to archives in Edinburgh such as the National Archives of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, and the Scotland s People Centre who hold the statutory birth, marriage and death records (post 1855), and can visit other archives around Scotland if required. Many descendants of 19th century emigrants visit the area each year wishing to see where their ancestors lived and visit their graves. Research carried out in advance of a visit - locating gravestones, searching for the remains of old crofts and steadings, or identifying family names in an old school or church register can bring the past to life and make the time spent in the area much more meaningful. For those who have the time to carry out their own research while in the area I can provide guidance on what records are available and where to find them, and for those not able to visit I can provide (following research) a full family history including photographs of gravestones and places of ancestral interest.
