Mary Penner began documenting her family history at the age of ten and still continues to pursue her passion for genealogy. A former college and high school English teacher, she now works as a professional genealogist, speaker, editor, and writer. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Professional Genealogists and has received research grants from the Kansas State Historical Society and the State Historical Society of Missouri. She researches throughout the state of New Mexico specializing in Santa Fe Trail traders, land grant records, and Mexican and Territorial era documents. She also has extensive research experience in Midwestern states. In 2013 Mary received the Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit from the Association of Professional Genealogists for outstanding service to the Association. Mary serves as the editor of the New Mexico Genealogist, the quarterly journal of the New Mexico Genealogical Society.

Family history research; legal and forensic research including quiet title suits, probate research, land grant research; writing biographical narratives; editing family histories and narratives; presentations on genealogical topics; conducting writing workshops.
