APG’s Continuing Education Requirement

The Association of Professional Genealogists believes that all genealogists, no matter their experience or knowledge level, stand to benefit from continual learning, and recognizes that continuing professional development is crucial to advancing and improving the profession.

To further this goal, the Board of Directors voted unanimously on January 7, 2015, to make Continuing Education a requirement of APG membership.

Members of the Association of Professional Genealogists are required to complete and report a minimum of twelve (12) hours of Continuing Education per membership year. Reporting must be done by 31 January of the following year.

The twelve (12)-hour educational requirement may be met by any combined total of the following methods: college courses, conferences, discussion groups, institutes, lectures, online courses, self-directed study, or webinars.

Members report their continuing education hours using the form found at https://apgen.org/cpages.continuing-ed-report.

Completing the form by 31 January is one component required to have a profile in APG’s online professional directory. [1] The requirement is waived for members of less than one year.

Exemptions to the requirement for may be granted on a case-by-case basis for extenuating circumstances, such as disability, health issues, and long-term family difficulties.

[1] Other requirements are the payment of annual dues and the signing of APG’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practices.
