<DIV>I wanted to announce the publication of two new books on the Civil War in
Maryland:</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>THE CIVIL WAR DRAFT IN MARYLAND: LISTS OF DRAFTED MEN, 1862-1865</DIV>
<DIV>Volume I: 16 Oct 1862-23 Jun 1864</DIV>
<DIV>Volume II: 24 Jun 1864-8 Apr 1865</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>These lists of draftees were published in the BALTIMORE SUN newspaper,
usually on the day following the draft. While some lists contain only the
names of those drafted, many of these lists also contain:</DIV>
<DIV>- street address or post office address</DIV>
<DIV>- occupation</DIV>
<DIV>- slave owner for slaves drafted</DIV>
<DIV>- various other notes, including a statement if multiple brothers were
drafted, or if a draftee had gone south to join the Confederates</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Not all drafted men actually served in the military—due to health,
substitution, commutation, or exemption—so information on some non-soldiers is
included. The two volumes together contain almost 25,000 total names,
fully indexed.</DIV>
