I have an instance for a man but not quite as old as your example. This
man was age 51. His Union Army service was family lore. I was
skeptical, but, his widow, Lucinda, received a government pension for
his service. I also obtained his service record (enlisted for a 60-day
tour of duty in July 1862 and died of a bullet wound in September 1862).

How common would it have been for a man in his mid to late 60s
to have served in a Union Cavalry unit during the Civil War?
[Snipped.] Plus, there is a pension file that lists a widow with the
same first name as the wife. I don't have the actual pension record,
so I don't know if her maiden name matches. But the names are unusual
enough that it would be too much of a coincidence.
