I watched that show (The Locator) it does not go thru the steps of research, but provides tips along the way. Yes, the "young" son of the Locator, did a name search on Facebook, which you could do on Twitter and Myspace.com as well. If you have Aol, you can search the Aol member list. I recently just used whitepages.com and was able to narrow the search, because I knew previous addresses and wrote a couple of letters and found my person.
This makes me curious --
I recently got cable tv and have wasted too much time watching all sorts of stuff. Just saw a show called The Locator - anyone familiar with this? From the couple cases I saw, some seemed incredibly easy (the daughter was on Facebook) and some were real sob stories.
I don't do 20th century searches, really. Does anyone who does heir searching have any comment on this show? At a quick view it looks like an abridged version of the process of research, kind of like History Detectives. Probably will not show all the dead ends.
In regard to searching for the living, several years ago, when I was first
learning how to research, I posted a message to a message board in search of
a friend from elementary school. (I wouldn't use the boards for that now.) I
didn't get a reply.

A few years later, a law firm in Austria saw my post and contacted me. They
were looking for descendants of my friend's deceased mother. By then my
search skills had advanced to the point where I could tell them where to
find the obituary for the mother. As a result, my friend and her sibling
received an inheritance.
