I'm taken aback by what's available on www.archive.org in the way of  US census microfilm images and revolutionary war microfilmed material  Just looking through the _Complete regular army register of teh United States for one hundred years (1779-1879) which details dates of when companies were raised..   Compiled service records on there too (not directly searchable but if you know the microfilm number and reference number, and the fact the individuals are listed alphabetically...)
