Sometimes a genealogist needs to know a little economics.  The  following 
link will take you to an article that appeared in the February 27 St.  Paul 
(MN) Pioneer Press.
Ed Lotterman writes a regular column on economic issues geared to  
non-economist readers.  This particular article does a nice job of  explaining some 
of the economic cycles that affected our 19th century  ancestors.
