2011 Old Farmer's Almanac has interesting article on Cross-Quarter Days.
According to that, May 1 was the day for young couples to pair - although not in
marriage. In the early ages, a wedding would occur on the next Cross-Quarter
Day, after 3 months of courting. For impatient ones, the waiting period would be
shortened to 6 weeks, concluding on Midsummer Day - hence our tradition of June
bridals.
