[APG Public List] Question about a marriage bond

In 1856 the standard amount was $1000 (penalty) for a NC marriage bond. I
just answered a similar question on another list a couple days ago. The
original bond penalty in 1741 was 50 pounds, raised to 500 pounds in 1778,
and $1000 in statutes of 1836-1837. Here are a couple sites that discuss
NC marriage bonds:

Ok, you both have addressed the purpose of the marriage bond, but I did not
think that was the question. What is the significance of a large bond being
required when all (at least many) are much, much less.
