A response to the two comments I've gotten so far... The phrase "diseases of
neglect" was used by a modern person (quoted in the article) who heard the
causes of death from Annie Moore's children's death certificates. I
personally didn't see that most of them were diseases of neglect.

As for the story of a man stepping aside and letting Annie go first, there
are apparently two stories: one that a man saw how emotional she was about
getting to America and let her go first, and another, that a German man "was
shunted aside in favor of the English-speaking youngster." (quote from the
article).

I highly recommend the article AND the comments on the web site.
