I have an ancestor from Illinois who served in the Iowa Regiment known as
the "Gray Beards"; offically the 37th regiment.
These men were past the age for military service: from forty-five to
sixty-four years of age.
Their main purpose was to guard at prisons and other military posts; thus
relieving the younger soldiers so they could perform active service in the
field.
