A two-day genealogy conference, held annually at Schloss Dhaun near Kirn
in the Rhineland-Palatinate, will take place on the 17th and 18th of April
2010. The themes for this year’s event cover research in the United States
and in Germany.
MAGS past president, John T. Humphrey, will participate in this event
with his presentation Die Erforschung unserer deutschen Vorfahren: eine
US-amerikanische Perspektive ( Researching our German Ancestors, An American
Perspective). Other lectures related to the American theme include a lecture
by Helmut Schmahl that will explore the myths and realities of emigration to
the United States. Conference organizer, Roland Geiger, will present in
German a lecture prepared by the American historian Philipp Otterness,
covering the first mass migration to America in 1709.
Lectures covering German sources include a presentation by Hans Joachim
Kuhn on Sources for Family Historians from the late Middle Ages for Westrich
and Hunsruck. Günter Paulus will give a lecture about the Kirner
genealogist Oskar Pennigroth. A presentation addressing generational morals and
conflict in the Middle Ages will be given by Sylvie Tritz. Attendees will also
have an opportunity to explore German paleography.
All presentations will be delivered in German.
Schloss Dhaun is a castle near Hochstetten overlooking the Nahe River
valley. Parts of the fortification date from the thirteenth-century.
