Thank you, Doug. That is the kind of thing I was after. In fact, I think
the Drake book was one that I was thinking of.

Paul Drake, What Did They Mean By That?: A Dictionary of Historical Terms
for Genealogists (Heritage Books, 1994).
Marc McCutcheon, The Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in the 1800s
(Cincinnati: Writers Digest Books, 1993). This has a chapter on occupations.
There are probably a few newer titles out there, as well.
