Here's a trick you can use.

If you bookmark http://search.ancestry.com/search/default.aspx?new=0

you'll be in old search every time.  It's the little tricks that make the
difference. ;-)

If you choose old search, you should be in  it every time, but sometimes the
preferences gets lost.
