From my perspective, as the owner of several registered copyrights and the common law owner of copyright to many more works, it is far more like preventing Google from locking the barn door with the horses inside and all the owners _outside_, then charging 'tolls' to anyone going in or out.
What I find interesting, and hugely insulting, is the assumption that the "public" benefits when copyrights expire. _Publishers_ benefit, because they don't have to pay the author. Every private interest _but_ the author benefits.
