APGQ Managing Editor Job Description
RESPONSIBLE TO: President, Executive Committee (EC), and Board of Directors.
Produce attractive and high-quality publications that members will want to read and need to save. Managing Editor is a paid independent contractor position, subject to an annual performance review by the Executive Director and the Executive Committee.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Focus the APG publications on matters of concern to APG members, professional genealogists, and the genealogical profession as a whole.

Plan themes and/or focus of future issues.

Make recommendations, as needed, for the positions of Copyeditor and proofreader.

Maintain prompt and courteous communication with potential and actual contributors, members and readers, and APG board members.

Establish regular columns and columnists, as appropriate.

Solicit original articles and evaluate unsolicited ones. Reprints are strongly discouraged.

Issue contracts to all contributors.

Accept or reject submitted articles and propose revisions to contributors as needed. The editor is also responsible for any substantial edits necessary for readability, accuracy, flow, and fit.

Work with the layout editor on selection of appropriate graphics and screenshots. The layout editor is responsible for providing any needed graphics for a nice visual layout; the managing editor has final veto power on both graphics and layout.

Conduct a final review following the copyediting, layout, and proofreading stages, to ensure that meanings have not been changed nor errors introduced.

Observe copyright laws. Complete and submit any necessary copyright forms to the Library of Congress.

Ensure that all publication and advertising deadlines are met in a timely fashion.

Submit final copy of APGQ to printer; plus PDF copy to webmaster for posting on the APG website.

Oversee content quality and focus for the APG e-News, assisting the editor with content acquisition as needed.

Prepare reports for quarterly board meetings.

Work with Communications Officer on social media content.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and/or Executive Committee.
COOPERATES WITH:

Executive Director on administrative matters.
- Copy Editor, Proofreaders, Publications Advisory Committee, and the APGQ Advisory Committee on editorial matters.
- Layout Editor on design and deadline matters.
- Book Reviews Editor
Advertising Manager on space, advertising, and deadline matters.
