Your ancestry isn't just a list of names and dates, it's the colorful tale of your family's past and present. It's what gives your name its special meaning and continues to shape your story every day.

My degrees are in biology and chemistry, a.k.a. puzzle solving, research, and fact finding. I am a research nerd that loves the meticulous details. I build accurate family trees full of historical records, immigration and naturalization documents, newspaper articles, photographs, ship manifests, and more.

I am a story teller, performer, and writer living in NYC. I use these skills to piece together the entertaining and true stories about your ancestors. I document and present them to you to share around your dinner table. Together we ensure your family stories are never lost again. Stories with drama that makes Hulu and Netflix envious.

Learn the names of your ancestors, uncover what you have in common along side the lost family stories.

Is there a mystery within those gnarled branches and fallen leaves of your family history tree?

Are you intrigued or perplexed about the history of your ancestors?

Or are you in search of that final resting place of an ancestor within Yorkshire and beyond?

Hello! My name is Tee Bylo and I am your genealogist, writer, family history coach and grave hunter here at The Dead Sleuth.

The Dead Sleuth is a registered company located in the City of York offering professional genealogical services for those looking to solve the riddles and absurdities of their own family history.

With access to a wealth of local repositories and archives throughout Yorkshire and beyond – I work with those who need an experienced and dedicated history sleuth by their side as they embark on a fascinating journey to uncover the lives of their ancestors.

From genealogical advice, family history research, probate transcription, archive retrieval, to photography, lineage reports and ancestral storytelling – The Dead Sleuth offers a rich menu of research services.

And, if I’m not in search of a missing ancestor or poring over the details on a newly discovered death certificate or trawling through the parish records in search of a burial entry – I’ll be wandering among the tombstones somewhere with notebook and camera in hand.

As a enthusiastic taphophile with an interest in tombstone symbolism - I also undertake grave hunts with the use of parish records and newspapers as the location and image capture of the resting place of our ancestors can be a poignant piece of the jigsaw.

In the absence of a marked grave I can also research, and photograph the surrounding vicinity in which an ancestor rests.

I share the tales and triumphs of family history and of my wanderings among the tombstones in search of the unquiet dead as a geneablogger at Graveyard Squirrel.

The Dead Sleuth also offers bespoke ancestral tours for visitors who are curious about understanding their family history in the context of location and would love to walk in the footsteps of an ancestor, visit the place they once called home or stand at the foot of their grave in a quiet churchyard.

However, as every research commission is as unique as the person who is requesting it – I offer an initial thirty minute FREE consultation to ensure that I am the perfect sleuth for my client.

As a public speaker, I am happy to chat with eager ears and curious minds about tales of Victorian criminality, tombstone tourism, sleuthing those elusive ancestors and fallen women.

Passionate about the benefits of Ancestral Healing – I also work alongside those who are seeking to understand, reveal and free inherited grief and trauma from their family histories.

And with my love of family history, storytelling and Victorian crime – I am the founder of The Polite Tourist which offers unique walks through the unquiet streets of York, Scarboro’, Leeds and beyond.

You can discover The Dead Sleuth on Trustpilot, X. Facebook, and Instagram.

    Personal Overview:

With a bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and History Mar Montgomery is a Professional Genealogical Researcher with HeirSearch.

Since 1967, HeirSearch has specialized in providing forensic genealogy A Better Way to the legal and trust professions. We welcome the opportunity to work with executors, administrators, trustees, fiduciaries, bank and trust officers, and their counsel.

Significant concerns have been expressed over the years by the legal profession and consumers about the percentage fees, or “contingency fees,” charged by some heir locator firms. Many heir locator firms, or “heir hunters,” may use questionable, high-pressure tactics to obtain excessive percentage fees of inheritances. In order to protect their fees, heir hunters often withhold the name of the deceased, and even the amount of the inheritance, until the heir agrees to sign a contract. This means heirs are asked to sign away an unknown amount, sometimes as much as 50% of their total inheritance. There is A Better Way™.

Our five-pillar approach ensures reasonable, non-percentage-based fees, authorized search services, a 97% success rate, documented court-ready reports and worldwide service.

    Reasonable Non-Percentage-Based Fees

Our fees are quoted in advance and determined by a set fee schedule based on the type of search and your requirements – never as a percentage of the trust or estate.

    Authorized Search Services

Considerable windfall rewards are available for heir hunters, who frequently start unauthorized searches without client consent or contractual arrangement. Our reasonable fees are always quoted in advance, and we never initiate an independent search. Our experience has shown that courts look more favorably on agreements with heir search firms when the cost of the search is known in advance.

     97% Success Rate Since 1967

Thanks to a combination of specialized education, training and experience, our research experts are highly qualified to find missing heirs and beneficiaries. Since 1967, this knowledge and expertise has resulted in an average success rate of 97%.

    Documented Court-Ready Reports

Our final report provides clear and convincing evidence, suitable for an exhibit in court proceedings. All available supporting documentation is included in a concise, easy-to-read format.

    Worldwide Service

HeirSearch has successfully located tens of thousands of missing heirs and lost beneficiaries in more than 65 countries. Regardless of the location of the missing heirs or amount of information available on them, our in-house knowledge and international expertise means we succeed where other search firms often fail.

    Greetings!

My career started out as a Hobbist with Genealogy in the early 1990's when I received my first genealogy program for my computer. I had been a curious child for most of my life, asking questions about our family.

Joining Ancestry when they first began their online business, I started assisting others as an "Angel" volunteer using their DNA results to narrow down and locate who their biological parents were.

Currently, I work as a Curative title agent, as a Project Coordinator offering Professional services in curing Title issues with deceased owners for various Renewable Energy Projects.

No matter your need for Genealogical services, I look forward to assisting you with your project in the near future.

I offer family history research and mentoring services, specializing in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. My rate is $50/hour plus expenses.

I began my family research 25 years ago when my family was given a letter my grandmother had written about my father's family history. I excitedly bought some beginner genealogy books and tried to use them to start building my family tree. Unfortunately, I was quickly overwhelmed by the task and put it aside. I would pick it back up many times over the years and try again. When Ancestry came out, it seemed like the task was finally going to get manageable and I would be unraveling family secrets in no time. I did not find it that easy, however, and like many people, I justified my monthly subscription fee as it gathered dust. I took a couple of "research" trips. I managed to find the town square in Norwich, Connecticut where the first Adgate was a founder, but I never really felt sure of myself to know the best use of my time when I was there. Sound familiar?

Speed forward to two years ago when I decided to take the plunge and signed up for the online Principles of Genealogy course at Boston University. It has changed my research completely. So much so that I went on to take their Practicum course and finally received their Certificate in Genealogy Research. I no longer chase my tail trying to find new information on my ancestors and my tree is finally growing. In the beginning, my focus was to race to get back to as many countries of origin as I could find. Since taking the courses, though, I have learned to slow down and stop just collecting names and dates of birth, death and marriage. I now relish in taking the time to study and learn about each family and they have come alive in my imagination, from their first land purchases in a new state to the fights in probate to decide what to do with their estate once they are gone. They start to feel like what they truly are: my family. If you choose to work with me, that's what I can offer you. Stories you can cherish about your family and what they might have gone through in order for you to be here, the joys and the dramas!

My family comes from both Ireland in the early 1800's and stretches back to Colonial America in the 1650's. Like many families settling the Midwest in the early to mid-1800's,  they moved from the East Coast states into the farm country of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, and I've been able to track them as they made their journey. I've helped others unravel mysteries in their family trees, and I look forward to helping you do the same.
